The 80/20 rule.

greg | January 26, 2010

There is a saying in computer programming:

“20% of the work takes 80% of the time. 80% of the work takes the other 80% of your time.”

I bravely stated yesterday that ” we are 80% done with wedding planning.”  Today Josh, who is planning a wedding of his own, told me “You’re not 80% done.  You only think you’re 80% done.”  He tends to be right about these kinds of things.

Here’s what we have accomplished thus far:

  • finalized a guest list and confirmed their attendance (all 9 of them)
  • booked a facility for the ceremony and reception (same place)
  • booked lodging for all guests (also the same place)
  • booked a pastor to perform the ceremony (my father)
  • picked a caterer (Rene, my best man)
  • booked flights
  • bought a dress (amazingly the first one she tried on)
  • purchased Rachel’s wedding band (came as a set with her ring)
  • decided on a honeymoon destination (we’re staying in Washington)
  • started a blog

As far as the actual wedding itself goes (not the honeymoon or the logistics involved in merging two lives together) here’s what else I think we have to do:

  • Gift registry
  • Book rental cars
  • Set up the Chicago party (this could be the biggest time sink)
  • Set up the Buffalo party (probably mostly handled by Rachel’s parents)
  • Purchase my wedding band
  • Write vows
  • Find a photographer

What are we missing?

Engaging with social media

greg | January 25, 2010

(This is a repost of an article I wrote for txilife.com, a blog of the IT and web consultancy I work for.)

I heard a pastor say that when he and his wife got engaged thirty years ago, they stayed up for hours into the night calling people to share the news, waking up many of their friends and family on the east coast.

Within two hours of Rachel saying “yes”, we made 8 phone calls, all to immediate family.  We emailed 20-30 close friends, mostly people living here in Chicago.

And then, with a single post to Facebook, we notified 600 of our friends, family and acquaintances.  This included former co-workers, friends from high school whom I haven’t seen in 10 years, the mother of a kid I used to babysit, and cousins I’ve only met once.

Through Facebook we informed people we never would have contacted had we been required to actively do so.  We did so without intrusion – they received the news at their convenience when they logged into Facebook.  We allowed them to engage with the news at their own level of interest – they could gloss over it, send us a simple “congrats”, or flip through the photo album if so inclined.  And the efficiency of it all freed up Rachel and I to enjoy the rest of our evening.

The whole experience struck me as the most convenient use of social media in my life to date.

We got ourselves a blog.

greg | January 24, 2010

Two weeks ago Rachel and I got engaged. Our wedding planning is about 80% complete. It’s been a busy two weeks.

And now we have a blog.

Rachel and I have been blessed with a ton of friends and family who care deeply about us. Believe it or not, this is part of the reason we have chosen to do an extremely small wedding. We don’t want to rank our friends or attach monetary value to the importance of their relationship.

And we’d love to celebrate our marriage with all of you. We’d just like to do it in a venue where you’re not keeping us from starting our honeymoon.

We started this blog because we wanted a way to keep everyone informed and involved in this process.

Also, I’m kind of a nerd.

Love is…

Love is patient
Love is kind
It does not envy
It does not boast
It is not proud
It is not rude
It is not self-seeking
It is not easily angered
It keeps no record of wrongs
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth
It always protects
Always trusts
Always hopes
Always perseveres
